NAGTRI National Anatomy of a Complex Consumer Case Training
This program is hosted by the Center for Consumer Protection.
This intensive three and one-half day program is intended to enhance the participants' knowledge and skills in a constructive and positive learning environment facilitated by experienced attorneys serving as faculty. The program's primary goal is to afford participants the opportunity to gain an understanding of and overcome the challenges when enforcing consumer protection laws. Although this training discusses civil litigation issues, it is NOT a trial advocacy course in the strict sense of the term. Rather, it is designed to expose the participants to the wide and varied issues they will encounter when working on complex consumer protection investigations, settlements, and lawsuits.
The program will contain a balance of topical presentations and skills sessions on various aspects of consumer protection investigations and enforcement actions. The emphasis in both the presentations and skills sessions will be to build upon the knowledge and skills participants have, take what they learn and apply it in the context of such cases, and to finish the program with a better understanding of how to effectively and professionally enforce consumer protection laws.
Faculty-led presentations will cover many topics including the beginnings of a complex case; investigations and pre-litigation discovery; victims and witnesses; common ethical issues in consumer protection matters; pretrial motions; depositions; multistate cases; negotiations; dealing with the defense; calculating civil penalties and other forms of relief; and a real-life case study. There will also be skills sessions regarding pre-trial investigations, depositions, negotiations, and civil penalties/other relief utilizing a case study developed specifically for the training.
